2nd batch / 2a remesa

slightly under 3 weeks after sowing, have carried out some discarding. now stronger seedlings are out of the trays and into little pots. as the roots are still rather small, it is relatively easy to move them when the soil is slightly dry (stopped spraying a couple of days ago). 2nd batch of annuums and straggling chinenses is also under way in the propagator. as the putaparió continues to remain dormant, i have also added 16 new seeds.

2 weeks / 2 semanas

after 15 days in the toaster, 13 out of 15 non annuum varieties have already germinated with different success rates (there were some old seeds in there). the ones that have not germinated so far correspond to the chacoense putaparió and an unknown vietnam. i give up on the latter since the chillis from hue were not ripe and the seeds probably not viable. as i was anticipanting this, i sowed them in a corner of the propagator and will leave them there for the 2nd batch. finally, i will add the season last 5 varieties that recently hit my postbox.

tras 15 días en la tostadora, 13 de las 15 variedades no annuum ya han germinado, con diferentes tasas de éxito (creo alguna de las semillas eran ya bastante viejas). las que de momento no han germinado corresponden al putaparió (variedad chacoense de germinación lenta) y una desconocida de vietnam. esta última la doy por perdida puesto que los chiles obtenidos en hue eran inmaduros, probablemente de semillas todavía inviables. como ya anticipaba algo así, las planté en una de las esquinas del semillero y las voy a dejar ahí a ver si dan señales de vida más adelante cuando plante la 2a remesa. finalmente, voy a añadir 5 variedades más a la temporada que acaban de llegar al buzón.

chilli vodka

fed up with battling with bugs every season, this year the chemical warfare trenches are dug early. here's a dr pepper (from germany) capsaicin-based insect repellent recipe: add chilli slices to cheap vodka and leave to macerate, shaking vigorously daily. on top of becoming a repellent, it is a great method to get rid of frozen chilli left overs (in the picture, a bunch of naga morich pods). after a couple of weeks (or longer), the mix is ready to be strained and diluted in water for a good spraying!

harto de batallar con los bichos cada temporada, este año las trincheras para la guerra química son excavadas pronto. ahí va una receta de dr pepper (de alemania) para un repelente de insectos con base de capsaicina: añadir rodajas de chiles en vodka barato, agitando vigorosamente una vez al día. además de convertirse en repelente, es un excelente método de deshacerse de los excedentes de chile congelados (en la foto, frutos de naga morich). después de un par de semanas (o más), la mezcla está lista para ser colada y diluida en agua para un buen atomizado.

beginning / inicio

the 2008 season is off (or in!) the ground. in the picture, seeds soaking overnight in a chamomille diluted solution. last year i traded seeds for over 150 varieties, hence selection has been cumbersome. the first batch of 15 non-annuum varieties is now sown in the heated propagator. here's a graphic growing list (powered by thechileman.org), together with the 2008 growing data i will be updating throughout the year (2007 data if you're really curious...)
